In every significant wrestling scene across the globe, there are often two pillars holding the industry together—rivalries and partnerships that shape the very identity of a generation. Think Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, Cena and Batista, or Tanahashi and Okada. In Vietnam, one of those two foundational figures—alongside Rocky Huynh—is none other than the Prince of Wrestling, Sid Nguyen.
As head trainer at the VPW Academy, an SPWC original, and a former Openweight Champion, Sid’s reputation in the Southeast Asian wrestling scene is firmly cemented. Ahead of his upcoming match with The British Horror, we take a look back at the career of this Vietnamese wrestling icon.
Humble Beginnings
Sid's journey dates back to the earliest days of the Saigon Pro Wrestling Club. Long before there were even mat shows held in dance halls, Sid was among the first to team up with Rocky around 2016—training in a dusty, unairconditioned gym in Saigon. Although they received some local media attention, few could have predicted how far these pioneers would go in less than a decade.
His first documented match in front of an audience came in 2018 at SPWC Saturday Showdown, where he faced off against his eventual Saigon Hunters tag partner, Rocky. Despite losing, the match served as a vital stepping stone, sharpening his in-ring abilities for the bigger challenges to come.
Championship Gold
Sid’s potential quickly became evident. In just his second outing, he found himself in a triple threat match against Rocky Huynh and the now-archived name, EK Thien Khoi. Sid emerged victorious, becoming the first-ever SPWC Openweight Champion—a major milestone in the promotion’s history.
The Prince would go on to defend his title twice, first against An D and then against Rykioh The Vinh (now known as Jimmy AG). He later shifted focus to the tag team division, forming the Saigon Hunters with his best friend Rocky. They debuted at SPWC Clash of Fate but fell short against the VTX duo, leading Rocky to challenge Sid for the Openweight title at the next event.
At SPWC x MKW Dragon Fire, fans were treated to a historic cross-promotional event with Middle Kingdom Wrestling. However, for Sid, the night ended in heartbreak as he was outwrestled by Rocky, losing the title.
A Darker Turn
Following the title loss, fans witnessed a darker, more aggressive side of Sid. He began teaming with Le Tyler in opposition to Rocky, embracing more underhanded tactics. This new direction brought mixed results, including another failed title rematch. Eventually, his uneasy alliance with D.Austin unraveled in the summer of 2022.
Sid defeated the towering D.Austin in singles action and spent much of the following year in solo competition. One of his highlights was a title match against then-champion Damien Wolfe at Ultimate Collision, though once again, the championship eluded him. Sid was gaining momentum, but the crown he once held seemed just out of reach.
International Breakthrough and Injury
At Rumble 2023, Sid scored a major win in his first international contest, defeating Mitch Ryder. But wrestling is full of highs and lows—and during the Rumble match later that night, Sid suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined him until early 2024.
His return was met with a thunderous ovation. Throughout 2024, he remained a central figure in the main event scene—challenging Rocky for the Openweight title, reuniting with Rocky as the Saigon Hunters, and feuding with the notorious Vortex Rebellion. He even led his team, including protégé Henry, to victory over the faction. That year also saw Sid make his international debut in Kuala Lumpur, where he faced SPW Tag Team Champions The Juicy Boyz (Miles Karu & Wonderboy) in a spectacular bout.
The Road Ahead
As 2025 unfolds, the future looks bright for Sid Nguyen. Though he now occupies something of a veteran role in Vietnam Pro Wrestling, new doors are opening fast. With VPW’s national expansion in motion, Sid is poised to receive more opportunities—both at home and on the international stage.
The Prince of Wrestling may have already made history, but his story is far from over.
