Vietnam Pro Wrestling held its first wrestling show of 2025 on Saturday night. Once again, the action came from VAIB Studios in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City. The show was a complete advance sellout, with not a seat to spare. As always, Heart of Darkness Brewery and Eddie’s Diner were on hand to provide refreshments for the excited fans.

Speaking of the fans, it always amazes me how diverse VPW’s fanbase is. There are your hardcore wrestling lovers like myself who have watched wrestling for decades around the world. These include UK fans who grew up on the FWA, Rev Pro or Progress, there’s Japanese fans wearing their New Japan merchandise. Then we have casual fans who have got caught up in the mayhem, coming each and every time. We even see an amazing contingent of new fans young and old, I even met one young Vietnamese couple on a date! Wrestling is one of the greatest uniters of people from all nationalities and walks of life.

We began the night in typical fashion, with the one and only Xavier Patricks (X Pat) heading to the ring to a loud ovation. He thanked the sponsors, hyped up the five exciting matchups, and we were on our way.

Match 1 – Ares (VPW) vs. Aiden Rex (SPW)

It’s Vietnam’s heaviest hitter vs. Singapore’s flashiest flier in the opening bout. Surprisingly, Phuong Nam did not accompany Ares to the ring. Perhaps Nam fully trusts the monster to crush Rex without the need for oversight.

The action started fast, with Rex using speed to avoid Ares' power-based offense. Rex often relied on stomps to try and disable Ares' strength. At one point, the Singaporean star hit an impressive corkscrew moonsault that almost ended the match. However, on a second attempt, he was countered with a dodge, then a hard spear into Ares’ twisting dominator for the three count.

This match didn’t give fans much room to breathe, as the action came hard and heavy from bell to bell. Both competitors could have easily walked away the victor if not for one wrong step.

Winner: Ares

Ares must be considering his next move. He’s got the fans behind him, so what’s next? Does he make a play for another title shot? Or perhaps it’s time he travelled abroad to find new competition?

Aiden Rex impressed and had one of the strongest showings for an international wrestler in VPW in a while. He now needs to regroup and focus on his upcoming match against Dragon Dia.

Match 2 – Guerrilla Games – Vortex Rebellion (Kira, KPY, Xumin Long, D. Austin) vs. Team Sid (Sid Nguyen, Hy Draco, Khoa Truong, Henry)

Before the match, X Pat explained the rules: a WarGames-style match with teams entering at 90-second intervals and no disqualifications.

Sid Nguyen led the charge for his team and was met by KPY. Wasting no time, both men started throwing vicious punches.

The action followed the same pattern, with the heels gaining temporary advantages at different intervals. The order of entry after the initial two went: Xumin Long, Khoa Truong, Kira, Henry, D. Austin, and finally, Hy Draco to a huge ovation.

As the final man entered, Hy Draco exploded into action, hitting Vortex Rebellion with a huge flying kick from the ground to the second rope. The match then descended into chaos, with punches flying and shirts ripped off. In the end, Hy Draco’s moonsault dive over the top rope wiped out most of Vortex Rebellion, allowing Sid to hit a stomp and Khoa to get the pin on KPY for the win.

Following the match, KPY knelt in the ring looking enraged even though his team and the winners had already headed to the back.

Winners: Team Sid

The timed entrances added a fresh dynamic, and VPW rarely hosts large tag matches, making this feel special. The format works well and could definitely be expanded to longer times or even weapons-based brawls in the future.

Match 3 – Venom Shank vs. Billy

I’m not sure why the green-clad twins agreed to face another of Phuong Nam’s monsters in a 2-on-1 match, but here we are.

Billy and Bobby came out, trying to behave more in line with Phuong Nam’s demands. Billy tried to emulate Ares' power moves, but the two smaller, faster opponents slipped through his offense. Caught between his moral compass and his manager’s pressure, Billy eventually fell to a sudden V-Trigger from Venom Shank, securing the pinfall.

Winner: Venom Shank

After the match, The Classic Night tried to walk away from Phuong Nam, only to learn they were locked into an ironclad contract. Nam offered them a way out: defeat NJPW’s Natural Classics.

It’s great to see The Natural Classics back, especially as they’ve gained momentum since 2023. Let’s see if Billy and Bobby can escape their dodgy contract.

Match 4 – VPW Tag Team Championship – Mighty Mighty & MJ Riz vs. VTX (c)

This match had gimmicks all over it — from Mighty’s braces to VTX and the milk tea, and, of course, MJ Riz channelling Singapore’s own Michael Jackson.

VTX spent most of the match avoiding situations where Mighty Mighty could overpower them. Their antics sparked a rare aggression in Mighty that we haven't seen before. One standout moment was VTX hitting double stunners on the champs.

In the end, Phuong Tran came off Damien Wolfe’s shoulders with a splash for the pin on MJ Riz.

After the match, an enraged Mighty Mighty hit a double Banzai Drop on the champs.

Winners: VTX to retain

Another fun title defense! VTX seems ready for another challenge. Perhaps Saigon Slam will be the moment they finally face some more local talent.

Main Event – Devil’s Barbershop: Rocky Huynh vs. The British Horror

Before the match, a full barbershop setup was placed at ringside.

Horror came out first, his hair so gelled it looked impenetrable. He was accompanied by Dark Princess, who is growing bolder in interacting with the fans. Rocky was out next, and the action kicked off immediately.

They began with standard holds, but once Dark Princess distracted the ref, things turned violent. Metal trays, steel chairs, and even a shopping cart made their way into the match. A chain was also brought into the ring which Rocky used to send horror wobbling and hit a picture perfect cutter. The highlight came when Rocky dropkicked Horror headfirst into the cart.

The chaos peaked when the referee got caught in the crossfire and went through a table. With the ref down, Rocky’s clear three-count following a guitar shot went unnoticed. This allowed Horror to recover, hit a brutal Tiger Driver, and steal the win.

Winner: The British Horror

The VPW fans were stunned — it’s been a while since a show ended on such a sour note. What a brilliant brawl, lots of suspense and the match left everyone talking. A friend of mine spoke to me today to comment how brutal it was and was even concerned for British Horrors welts!

Once again the show was full to the brim with action. Each and every wrestler on the card worked harder than ever to give the fans a night to remember and that’s exactly what I love about VPW. A show is never a ‘B Show’ everyone is always on, pumped and primed to the ready. It’s easy to forget the men and women behind the scenes have other things in their life going on from jobs, families to other pursuits because they clearly work so hard to prove they are the best night out in Vietnam and certainly will be for a long time to come.

Looking Ahead to Saigon Slam on April 19th:

- Why was KPY so enraged? Was it at Sid, Khoa, or his own team?

- Can anyone stop Ares' international path of destruction?

- What will Rocky’s mindset be next show?

- Who are the next challengers for the belts?

- Can The Classic Night beat The Natural Classics and escape Phuong Nam’s control?

Predictions for the Next Card:

- Hy Draco vs. British Horror: Horror holds two victories over a former champ and has never had a title shot. Surely it's time?

- VTX vs. Saigon Hunters: It’s been almost six years since these teams faced off. The Hunters have never won tag gold — could this be their moment?

- Ares vs. ???: Who steps up next? D. Austin? An NJPW guest? Or does Ares hunt for competition abroad?

- Khoa Truong vs. Kira or KPY? With KPY’s post-match rage, something is definitely brewing.

Whatever happens in the next six weeks, be sure to book your tickets soon — or risk missing out on another unforgettable night of SEA Wrestling action!
