IWGP Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji Set For Vietnam Pro Wrestling's The Rumble
New Japan star will attend the August 22 show in Ho Chi Minh City as a special guest, not as a competitor
Vietnam Pro Wrestling has announced that Yota Tsuji, the reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion, will attend THE RUMBLE 2026 on Saturday, August 22 at VAIB Studio in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City.
Tsuji appears as a special guest and as a representative of New Japan Pro-Wrestling. VPW has been clear on this point in its announcement: he will not wrestle, he will not perform, and he will not take part in the pre-show Meet and Greet. Fans buying tickets on the expectation of seeing him in a match should read the announcement carefully.
According to VPW, Tsuji will be in the building to watch the roster compete and to see the atmosphere at a Vietnamese show for himself.
The visit is the clearest sign yet of a working relationship between the two promotions, and it does not come out of nowhere. NJPW Chairman Naoki Sugabayashi attended Spring Bash earlier this year, and last month Vietslam, the Chris Jericho produced documentary on VPW, was released. The company has had more eyes on it in 2026 than at any point in its history.
VPW says NJPW has supported the company over the past several months under Sugabayashi, with both sides exploring a relationship focused on developing professional wrestling and talent in Vietnam. No formal partnership, talent exchange or training agreement has been announced at this stage.
For VPW, the significance is hard to overstate. The company has been building the sport in Vietnam for more than a decade, largely without the kind of international attention that other Southeast Asian scenes have drawn. Having the top champion of Japan's biggest promotion in the crowd is a first for the country.
Tsuji is one of the most recognisable names in Japanese wrestling. He won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from Callum Newman at NJPW Dominion in Osaka-jo Hall on June 14, 2026, starting his second reign with the title. He is also a two-time IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion and won the 2024 New Japan Cup. He was the man who brought the IWGP Heavyweight Championship back in January 2026, retiring the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in the process.
THE RUMBLE 2026 takes place on Saturday, August 22 at VAIB Studio, 37 Bế Văn Cấm, Tân Kiểng, Quận 7, Ho Chi Minh City. Doors and the Meet and Greet open at 6:00 PM, with the first match at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available through the link in the VPW Instagram bio.
